How important is posture at a standing desk?
Imagine you start a new sport, or workout routine. Do you start slow or do you go all out and hurt yourself?
Going from sitting to standing at your desk is similar.
In an ideal situation, you want to stand for about 20 minutes at a given time. If you are new to standing at work, you should stand for no more than 20 minutes an hour. Chances are you will start by standing 20 minutes a few times a day.
The important thing to remember is that you need to sit. Give your body a break! If you are standing for too long while working, your legs and feet will get tired, and your overall posture will suffer. This leads to you hunching over your work, no better than your sitting posture.
Once you are comfortable with sit to stand, you can stand more frequently. Perhaps 20 minutes standing, 20 minutes sitting, 20 minutes standing, etc.
Know your limits!
If you are tired when sitting, then stand. If you find yourself leaning over on your surface and your body is tired of standing, sit back down.
You shouldn't sit all day, and you shouldn't stand all day in static postures. MOVE! Get up, walk around, stretch. The more you move throughout your entire day, the better.
Also - take care of you footwear choices. Standing in heels or other unsupportive shoes will not help you. Find comfortable shoes to stand in. Remember, standing at work is physical - would you run on the treadmill in heels or work loafers? I hope not!
