What is a safety knife? and types?

Nowadays, there are many kinds of tools used in our lives, such as open-box knives, kitchen knives, utility knives, hobby knives, ceramic knives, etc. Each tool has a corresponding role in a specific scene. But can they be called safety knives? The answer is obviously easy to see.

First of all, we need to understand what is a safety knife. The safety knife is a spring-loaded automatic retracting utility knife.

For example, when we use a safety knife to cut the carton, we need to press and hold the button to adjust the length of the blade for better cutting, and when the safety knife leaves the carton, the blade will rebound. Its principle is to make it easier for users to directly touch the blade to better protect the body. This is why the safety knife is widely used and why it is so important.

Why is it recommended to use a safety knife?

According to a report from a “Knife Injury in the US Emergency Room 1990-2008”: During the period 1990-2008, there were an estimated 8,250,914 people injured by knife-related injuries, with an average annual injury of 434,259, or 1190 people per day. The injury rate is 1.56 injured per 1,000 US permanent residents per year. Among them, the finger/thumb ratio is 66% (most often injured), and the tear is 94% (the most common type of injury).

It is conceivable that if we change the ordinary tool into a safety knife, it will effectively reduce the risk of injury.

So, what are the common safety knives?

1.Semi-automatic safety knife

The first safety knife to enter the market, the semi-automatic safety knife is the ancestor of all safety knives. This type of knife is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as cutting plastic, foam, cardboard, etc.

The concept behind it is simple: when the user pushes the knife button with the thumb and moves the blade onto the material being cut, the force of the cut will keep the blade stretched so that the user can remove their thumb from the button. Once the blade loses contact with the cutting surface, the blade retracts.

Semi-automatic knives have a big effect, and we don't need to always remind our employees to turn off the blades, which also helps prevent one of the most common accidents: damage caused by the knife touching the hand and touching the open blade.

2. Automatic safety knife

Not everyone likes to use the blade to retract and open the blade to cover the safety function, that is why the fully automatic safety knife was created.

Once the user begins to use the fully automatic safety knife for cutting, it does not matter whether the thumb slides on the blade button or moves away from the blade slide button; because the blade of the fully automatic safety knife is operated independently of the blade bar, and once the blade is the cutting surface loses contact and the blade will automatically retract.

Whether it is semi-automatic or fully automatic, it has the same safety features, but the use is different.

For example, in the transportation sector of industries such as retail apparel, employees need to cut a few feet of cardboard immediately. They often need to stop and reposition the size in the middle of the incision because they can only use the same incision for cutting. It is more convenient to use a semi-automatic safety knife at this time, as long as the user's thumb applies pressure to the button, the automatic blade will retract when the blade loses contact, and the semi-automatic blade will remain stationary during repositioning. When the employee needs to use it again, use the thumb to stretch the blade to start a new cut.

That is, in environments where employees need longer or faster cuts, semi-automatic blades may be more suitable for work because the blades require less reset when the cut is interrupted. vice versa.

3.Invisible blade

This type of style is more common, the invisible blade is always open, but because the blade is hidden in the cutting channel, the user is always protected from injury, because the blade is always in contact without any cutting. This allows the user to cut quickly and safely.

This tool is suitable for cutting film, plastic packaging, plastic bags, foam and more. The cutting surface has a stable clip for the cutting operation, which is suitable for left-handed and right-handed users.

Maybe you will ask me, is there any other type of safety knife? Of course, the above three are just the most common. I will continue to share some basic knowledge about safety knives with you in the coming period.
